On October 3, 2019, a devastating building collapse occurred at Butali trading centre in Kakamega North, claiming the life of one person and leaving scores injured.
The incident happened at 10:00 am, with at least seven workers trapped under the debris for several hours before a rescue team arrived.
County Commissioner Pauline Dolla, who arrived at the scene several hours after the incident, confirmed the death and stated that the injured were rushed to different hospitals.
She urged residents to remain calm and allowed the police to conduct investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
Commissioner Dolla assured the public that an investigation would be conducted and the building's owner would be arrested and prosecuted if found guilty of violating construction rules.
"You don’t need to be an expert to understand that this building was sub-standard," she said.
