Kenya's anti-graft watchdog, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), has launched an investigation into allegations of dual nationality among some Members of Parliament.
According to EACC chief executive officer Twalib Mbarak, the investigation aims to verify claims that some MPs are holding foreign passports, which could be illegal under the law.
Mr. Mbarak stated that the action could include initiating a mechanism for removal from office for violating Chapter Six of the Constitution.
The investigation comes after activist Okiya Omutatah asked the commission to investigate 10 sitting MPs and one former legislator who allegedly held a foreign passport.
Ms. Mwinzi, a nominee for the position of Kenya's Ambassador to South Korea, was previously asked to renounce her American citizenship, a move she termed illegal and sued over.
Through his Kenyans for Justice and Development NGO, Mr. Omutatah said the investigation will be in the spirit of 'applying the law consistently.'
Dr. Shem Ochuodho, the Global chairperson of the lobby that represents associations of Kenyans abroad, said National Assembly could be admitting failure in its past vetting as well.
Some of the MPs alleged to hold dual nationality are Aden Duale, Yusuf Hassan, Safia Abdi, Adan Haji Ali, Mohammed Dahir Duale, Mohammed Garane, Charles Ngusya Nguna, Jane Kihara, Ledama Ole Kina, and Susan Kihika.
