This archive report was first published on 3 October 2019.

On October 2, 2019, police officers Japheth Kahindi and Bob Otieno, both based in Wajir, and their colleague Micheal Mwangi, were transporting a large quantity of bhang in a police Toyota Land Cruiser when they were intercepted by authorities along the Garissa – Thika Highway.

According to the charge sheet, the officers were found with 254kg of bhang, which they had allegedly changed the vehicle's number plate to conceal. Two other individuals, David Rabot and Asha Karama, who were traveling with the officers, were also charged with the same offense.

The five suspects denied the charges, but the magistrate, Felistus Nekesa, ordered them to pay a Sh5 million bond each with surety of similar amounts. The magistrate also rejected a plea to return Sh130,000 seized from the suspects, allowing the prosecution to keep the money as an exhibit during the hearing of the case.

The suspects are set to return to court on October 17 for the mention of the case.
