Published on October 3, 2019, the World Boxing Council (WBC) issued a warning to Fatuma Zarika's team, stating that the Super Bantamweight championship may be declared vacant if the contract for the Yamileth Mercado rematch is not signed in time.

According to a letter signed by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman Saldivar, Zarika's team has been given until Friday, October 4, 2019, to provide the signed contract. The letter emphasizes the importance of the contract, stating that the WBC has been 'extremely flexible' in supporting Zarika, and has spent 'countless hours' to ensure a satisfactory agreement for both parties.

However, if the contract is not signed, the WBC will declare the Super Bantamweight championship vacant. This would result in Zarika losing her title, which she has held since her victory over Yemileth Mercado in a Nairobi night fight at the KICC.
