On October 3, 2019, a report highlighted the alarming rate of weed consumption among university students in Kenya.
According to the report, almost 70% of university students are consumers of weed, with the business booming on campuses.
The weed business has several stages, including the supplier, dealer, and consumer.
The supplier is the head of production, distributing weed in large quantities to peddlers. To entice peddlers, the supplier offers extra weed and 'bei ya jioni' for quick sales.
Peddlers, often students, sell weed in joints, cookies, or mandazis, using innovative methods to evade security gadgets.
Female peddlers hide weed in their bras, makeup bags, or small purses, while male peddlers conceal it in wallets or books.
Buyers use similar methods to ferry weed into campus, with peddlers always finding new ways to circulate the product.
Smoking zones include open fields, rooftops, and other areas where students can smoke without detection.
