On October 3, 2019, an outbreak of an unknown disease at Starehe Girls Centre led to the quarantine and subsequent sending home of 52 students.
The Ministry of Health issued a directive that prompted the school to close temporarily.
According to a statement from the school board, all students were given a short break, and parents were asked to pick up their daughters by 12 noon on the same day.
Reports indicate that samples from the affected students have been taken for analysis at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
The symptoms of those affected included high-pitched cough, sneezing, and low-grade fever.
The school worked with the Health ministry, department of Integrated Disease Surveillance Response (IDSR), and sub-county health department to contain the situation.
Parents of the isolated students were informed of the quarantine.
