On October 3, 2019, the government bowed to pressure from Mombasa residents and suspended the decision to transport all imported goods via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

According to a University of Nairobi study, the SGR was killing the Mombasa economy, with importers and CFS owners facing huge losses and job losses.

Transport CS Macharia announced the suspension of mandatory haulage of sea cargo on SGR during a meeting at Harambee House in Nairobi, attended by stakeholders from the coastal region, including Governor Joho.

The move is expected to jumpstart the ailing economy, which has seen Mombasa turn into a ghost town.
