Published on October 3, 2019, former Kenyan councilors are calling for a better send-off package, echoing a Senate recommendation.

The Kenya Former Councilors Association (KEFOCA) is pushing for the implementation of the Senate's proposal, which includes a one-off sendoff package of Sh1.5 million and a monthly stipend of Sh30,000.

KEFOCA officials argue that their members are struggling financially despite their service to the nation. They point out that former councilors are being discriminated against, unlike other former leaders who received decent sendoff packages.

KEFOCA vice-chairman Jeremiah Gateri lamented the situation, saying, “…it is regrettable we were given peanuts during our time, while current MCAs who are equivalent to councilors are given hefty benefits yet we; the former civic leaders have been overlooked.”

KEFOCA is urging the government to expedite the implementation of the Senate's proposal, citing the financial struggles of its members.
