On October 3, 2019, a funeral service was held at the ACK St. Thomas Cathedral in Kerugoya for Judith Mwai and her daughter Catherine Nyaguthie Mwai, who were found strangled in their home in Golden Estate, South B.

Leaders who attended the burial ceremony, including Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, a relative of the family, condemned the killing and questioned the police's failure to apprehend any suspects.

“Arrest the suspects the way you arrest criminals once a foreigner is killed,” Muthomi said, taking a swipe at Interior CS Fred Matiang’i.

Mr. Mwai, the husband of the deceased Judith Mwai, remains hospitalized due to his long-term illness, leaving his son Robert Muriithi to care for him.

Reverend Mary Wanderi from Peoples Church Kerugoya and Reverend David Muriuki also expressed their disappointment at the lack of progress in the case, with Reverend Wanderi announcing that women in Kirinyaga county will pray for 21 days for justice to prevail.

The two bodies were found tied with sisal ropes around the necks, with police reports indicating that nothing was stolen from the house during the incident.

A report in the Standard newspaper alleged that the killer is believed to have called the police after committing the crime, with the female suspect allegedly saying, “Nimeua. Sasa kujeni muniue (I have killed now come and kill me)” as she used one of the deceased’s phone to make the call on September 21.
