On October 2, 2019, Kenya Railways unveiled new regulations for Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) commuters, restricting them from carrying their favorite drinks and snacks on the 5-hour trip.

The new rules, announced on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, ban the carrying of food and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and consider them contraband, subject to confiscation at entry points.

Passengers will now be forced to either go hungry or purchase overpriced food and drinks from SGR attendants on board, following the introduction of these stern regulations.

The move comes in the wake of a recent incident where a disorderly drunk couple was caught on camera, causing discomfort to other passengers.

Disgruntled passengers had previously complained about groups of people who would bring alcoholic drinks onto the train, drink to excess, and disturb others.

Kenya Railways has been criticized for failing to enforce the no food and drink policy at train terminals.
