On October 2, 2019, the prestigious Starehe Girls Center in Nairobi was closed indefinitely following an outbreak of a mysterious disease.
According to the school's management, the disease caused symptoms such as a high-pitched cough, sneezing, and low-grade fever in nearly 52 students.
The school's management alleged that they reached a unanimous decision to close the school after the disease spread despite efforts to isolate earlier cases.
However, the school clarified that they are working closely with the Ministry of Health, the Department of Integrated Disease Surveillance Response (IDSR), and local doctors to determine the cause of the infection and find a cure.
The school's management released an official statement on October 2, 2019, which is reproduced below.
