On October 2, 2019, a private diver named Musa was suspended by the government from participating in the search for the bodies of victims of the ferry tragedy at Likoni Channel. However, after intervention from Kenya Ferry Services Chairman Danson Mwazo, Musa has been allowed to rejoin the mission.
According to Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid, who was present at the Likoni Channel when Musa was banned, the private divers will continue their search alongside the Kenya Navy. Khalid noted that the private divers have valuable knowledge of the Likoni Channel and are likely to locate the vehicle faster.
The suspension of Musa came after the multi-agency team complained that he was interfering with the exercise. However, Kenya Ferry Services have since banned Musa from stepping near the rescue operations, citing concerns over his involvement.
On Wednesday, Government Spokesperson retired Col (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna stated that the multi-agency rescue team was using a robot to locate the vehicle after identifying 14 spots where it could be. However, poor visibility under the water has made it difficult for the divers to locate the exact location of the vehicle.
