Published on October 3, 2019, a project aimed at improving education in Kisumu County has left over 460 pupils of Rweya Primary School in Kolwa, Kisumu East Sub-County at risk.
The Sh4.5 billion Kisumu Urban Project, funded through a loan advanced to the Kenyan government by the French Development Agency, initially aimed to replace old classrooms with new ultra-modern structures.
However, 16 months after the project's commencement, Rweya Primary pupils are still learning in temporary Mabati structures opposite the school, which was supposed to be occupied within a year.
Concerned parents have accused Governor Anyang Nyong'o's administration of incompetence, citing that the contractor, Comacon Limited, is holding on to the key due to unpaid dues.
Other schools that benefited from the project, including Angira, Got Nyabondo, Rota, and Thim Bonde primary schools, have been occupied, with costs ranging from Sh70.8 million to Sh78.5 million.
The County has blamed the project management committee for not fast-tracking the handover of the school, while Comacon Limited has accused the County of delaying the process.
"We have written several letters to the City Management asking them to take over the project. In the last letter, we gave them a deadline of September 9. We do not understand why they have not heeded this deadline," said Cosmas Akeyo, a director at Comacon Limited.
