On October 3, 2019, a private diver hired by the family of the drowned victims in the Likoni ferry tragedy was suspended by the government.
The diver, Musa Sila, had been in constant communication with the family, updating them on the progress of the search mission, which had entered its fourth day without bearing fruits.
However, Kenya Navy officials did not take kindly to Sila's efforts and suspended him for allegedly giving misleading information to the family regarding the location of the bodies.
According to reports, Sila was denied entry into the rescue boat by Kenya Navy officials who claimed they did not know who he was.
Despite the challenges, Sila continued to work with the family, but the situation became unbearable for him when the Kenya Navy officials accused him of giving false information to the family and forced him out of the operation.
The Likoni ferry tragedy occurred on September 6, 2019, when a car slid off the Mv Harambee ferry and plunged into the Indian Ocean, claiming the lives of Mariam Kigenda and her daughter, Amanda Mutheu.
The family hired private divers to help retrieve the bodies after the government took too long to swing into action.
