On October 2, 2019, SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri broke the news to staff members in a meeting that the company would be laying off over 400 employees in Kenya.

The decision came after SportPesa closed its shop in the country, following in the footsteps of its rival, Betin Kenya, which also shut its operations in Kenya.

According to SportPesa, the company's exit from the Kenyan market was due to heavy taxation, frustration, and failure by the government to renew its operating licence.

As reported by Tom Bwana on Twitter, 'So today SportPesa management had to tell its staff what has been the inevitable for the last 3 months – the centre can't holder any longer. Massive grief seeing this entire team rendered jobless by ridiculous policies of our beloved government.'

Despite its exit from the Kenyan market, SportPesa will still be operational in other countries, including Tanzania, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

Kevin Namunwa, a reporter with Business Today, covered the story and is available for further information at [insert email address].
