On October 2, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko made headlines at the 118th Nairobi International Trade Fair by splashing Sh1.5 million on two champion Boran cows.
During the event, Sonko outbid other buyers to purchase a 630Kgs bull for Sh800,000 as a gift for President Uhuru Kenyatta. The auctioneer announced, 'The cow will go for Sh800,000 for the president from the Nairobi governor.'
Not content with just one purchase, Sonko also spent an additional Sh690,000 on another cow, bringing his total spend to Sh1,490,000.
The fair, which commenced on September 29, 2019, is a seven-day event that brings together people from all parts of the world to showcase their trades and innovations.
Speaking at the event, Sonko stated, 'We truly, are proud and honoured to host you all throughout this week. This recognition is also proof that indeed, Nairobi presents endless opportunities for all the innovators, traders and exhibitors represented here today.'
