On September 30, 2019, a tense scene unfolded at a Mutuati Town MPesa shop in Meru county when a General Service Unit (GSU) officer reportedly lost his temper.
A GSU officer, identified as Derrick Nateminya, who was stationed at Kinisa Station, had gone to the MPesa shop to withdraw Sh400.
However, when the MPesa operator, Carolyne Nkunja, demanded his ID card, the officer allegedly slapped her twice.
According to Nkunja, she had been holding the money waiting for the ID card to record the transaction when the officer snatched the money and slapped her.
Nkunja reported the incident at Mutuati Police Station under OB 18/30/9/2019.
As news of the incident spread, some members of the public took to the streets to protest, demanding that the county commander and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) intervene and ensure justice is served.
The victim's husband, Philip Nkunja, condemned the assault, stating that it was dehumanizing and that the law should take its course.
However, the accused officer denied the allegations, claiming he was being framed for something he didn't do.
