On October 2, 2019, Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi shed light on the true reasons behind the historic Uhuru-Raila handshake.
Addressing a gathering of Kenyans in the diaspora, Mudavadi revealed that Western countries threatened to cancel visas for Raila Odinga, other opposition leaders, and their associates unless they entered into a political deal that brought the handshake to life.
The visa ban, Mudavadi explained, was not limited to opposition leaders but also extended to their spouses, children, and relatives.
Mudavadi claimed that the Uhuru-Raila handshake was formed out of personal survival and threats of losing visa, rather than patriotism as often claimed.
He also stated that the country would eventually discover Raila's swearing-in as people's president and the circumstances surrounding it were not based on patriotism but personal survival.
Responding to the allegations, Raila's spokesperson Dennis Onyango refuted ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi's claims, stating that Mudavadi was displaying ignorance as he was out of the scene during the handshake formation.
