On a night that will go down in Tottenham's history as one of the worst, Bayern Munich condemned the English team to a 7-2 defeat at their home stadium.

Former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry was the star of the show, scoring four goals, while Robert Lewandowski grabbed two and Joshua Kimmich added another to inflict the biggest ever margin of defeat by an English team at home in any European competition.

It was also the first time Spurs had ever conceded seven goals at home in any major competition.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino called on his team to stay strong and united in the face of the devastating defeat.

"In football, it can happen," Pochettino said. "Every single touch went in. We are very disappointed and very upset, but we have to stay together. I think we are strong in our mentality."

Former Spurs great Chris Waddle, commentating for BBC radio, questioned the tactics used by Pochettino, saying: "I do not get the tactics. It's not playing to their strengths."

He also expressed concerns about the team's off-field issues, saying: "There is so much going on off the pitch. It should have been dealt with over the summer. Instead, all the contract questions are still going on. It's a shambles."

Despite the heavy defeat, Pochettino remained calm, saying: "It's more psychological now. The most important thing now is to have one idea, one analysis, one assessment."

Bayern boss Niko Kovac praised his team's performance, saying: "It was a great night for us and for German football. Playing this way here is unique."
