NTSA Denies Reinstating Road Spikes Amid Spike in Accidents ¶
NTSA has denied reports that it has reinstated road spikes following a spike in accidents in Kenya.
According to a statement issued by NTSA on October 2, 2019, the agency has not received any instructions from the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, to reinstate road spikes as reported in some media outlets.
NTSA has been at the center of controversy after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the agency to suspend its operations in January 2019 following a spike in accidents.
However, NTSA has maintained that it will continue to enforce road safety regulations and has even issued a directive to the Nairobi County government to suspend the issuance of licenses to matatu operators whose vehicles were banned by NTSA on September 30, 2019.
NTSA has also denied reports that it has taken over the enforcement of road safety regulations from the police, saying that it will continue to work with the police to ensure that road safety regulations are enforced.
Below are the matatu operators whose licenses were suspended by NTSA:
- City Tram Sacco (City Center-Jogoo Road-Buruburu-Outering-Umoja route)
- Mwamba Sacco (City center-Buruburu-Civil Servant-Komarock route)
- Marvellous Travellers (Komarock-Savanna-Jogoo Road-Eastleigh-City Center route)
- MNGN Sacco (Mathare North-Ngara-Gikomba route)
- Fig Komba (Dandora-Juja Road-Gikomba/Fig Tree-Ngara-Gikomba-Kiambio/Mathare North-Ngara-Gikomba-Fig tree-Kiambio route)
- Moonlight Coach Company (Commercial-Thika Road-Mathare North route)
- Mwirona Sacco (Bus Station-Thika Road-Kasarani-Mwiki route)
- Huruma Mini Bus (Huruma-Pangani-Kariokor-Tusker route)
- Transafaris (Nairobi-Nakuru-Kisumu route)
NTSA has urged the public to report any information regarding road safety to the agency.
