On Sunday, a car carrying Mariam Kigenda, 35, and her 4-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu plunged into the Indian Ocean in the Likoni ferry tragedy.

Eighty hours of search by divers have yielded nothing, prompting the government to switch to using robots to locate the bodies.

Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has urged the family to be patient, citing poor weather conditions and visibility as the main challenges.

According to Oguna, the recovery team had a rough idea of where the car might be, but not the exact location.

He explained that divers rely on touch to interpret what they are feeling, and robots are being used to direct them to the correct location.

So far, the divers have searched five locations without success and are yet to comb nine more places.

The activities taking place at the Likoni channel have contributed to the delay in the recovery mission, as it is the only gateway for ships into the Mombasa Port.
