On October 1, 2019, Tottenham Hotspur suffered a humiliating 7-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in a Uefa Champions League match.
Victor Wanyama, the Kenyan midfielder and Harambee Stars captain, was selected in the squad but remained on the bench throughout the game.
However, the fans' criticism of Wanyama's performance in recent times seemed to shift after the heavy loss.
Some fans argued that the team's struggles cannot be entirely blamed on Wanyama, citing the team's poor performance in the match.
"Pochettino told Wanyama the club is not a charity but they were charitable last night, conceding seven goals," one fan wrote on Twitter.
"Spurs have never lost by such a margin when Wanyama is playing," added another fan.
"Spurs fans are always blaming Wanyama but yesterday’s mutilation was merciless. Who are you now going to blame?" posed another.
Kenyan media personality Shaffie Weru also weighed in, saying "Wanyamaless Tottenham receive seven of the best from Tottenham."
Despite the setback, coach Mauricio Pochettino has urged fans to remain united, but media reports have already linked José Mourinho as his possible replacement.
