Located in the heart of the Middle East, Doha, Qatar has become a melting pot of cultures, with Kenyans forming a significant part of the expatriate community.

According to estimates, close to 30,000 Kenyans reside in Doha, with some having made the city their home for over 10 years.

One of the reasons Kenyans find it easy to navigate the city is the prevalence of the English language, which is widely spoken and used in signage and consumer products.

As Philip Muchiri, a resident of Doha, noted, 'If you’re ever afraid of getting lost in Doha, do not worry just walk around wearing a branded Kenyan shirt, wrist band or cap. Chances are you will be spotted by a compatriot.'

However, life in Doha comes with its own set of rules and regulations. For instance, traffic laws are strictly enforced, with cameras at every corner monitoring the roads and issuing fines to those who disobey the traffic lights.

But what's unique about the Qatari police force is their choice of vehicles. Unlike in other countries, where police often use Land Rovers or Land Cruisers, the Qatari police prefer souped-up Toyota Land Cruiser V8s or the latest Nissan Patrol SUVs.

On a more positive note, the city played host to the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championship, which saw Kenyan athletes shine on the global stage.

On September 27, 2019, the women's marathon took centre stage at the Corniche Island, with Citizen TV Sports editor Mike Okinyi leading a team of Kenyan journalists in cheering on the eventual winner, Ruth Chepngetich.
