This archive report was first published on 2 October 2019.

On October 1, 2019, strong winds were reported in various parts of Kenya, including Kirinyaga, Kitui, Thika, and parts of Nairobi, causing power outages and damage to buildings.

According to the Met Department, the strong winds were expected to last a few hours.

"High winds are usually expected during stormy weather or high-profile storms and hurricanes but they can also occur even on a clear day due to temperature variations," a report from Direct Energy says.

Strong winds can be caused by turbulence from cold air due to pressure differences.

To stay safe during strong winds, follow these tips:

  • Download a weather app on your smartphone to receive alerts and know when to move indoors.
  • Avoid sitting near windows and ensure they are closed.
  • If you are outside, stay face-down in a ditch or low-lying ground, with your hands clasped behind your head.
  • When driving, reduce speed and keep a safe distance from other cars.
  • Do not touch downed electricity poles or damaged electrical equipment; report it to the relevant authorities.
  • Keep children indoors when there are strong winds.
  • Park your car in an area with a roof if possible.

It is also essential to plan ahead by trimming tree branches that may pose danger, scheduling a professional to inspect your roof, and sealing any cracks around windows and doors.

Prepare an emergency kit and keep your compound clear of loose objects and debris that may be blown against your house.
