Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru is eyeing a final berth in the Floodies championship after his team qualified for the Cup semis, set to take place this weekend at the Impala Club.
Weru's team made a debut in the championship, drawing 23-all with last year's finalists Impala Saracens in a tight encounter played last weekend. Impala Saracens won through sudden death.
Menengai Oilers will face Kenya Harlequins in the semis, after the latter beat Top Fry Nakuru 19-15. Weru is optimistic that his team will win the duel.
“We lacked composure in our defense last weekend, which we have worked on ahead of the Quins match. We have also rectified our weak areas, particularly in the flanks and maintaining possession,” Weru explained.
Weru acknowledged that the match against Quins will be challenging, as they have experienced players who have featured for the national team. However, he is focusing on the game and believes his team will win.
Weru, a former Shujaa player, is also making his debut in the club category of the Floodies after leading varsity sides in the past years.
He praised Timothy Okwemba, who joined his team from Masinde Muliro University, saying he has settled fast in the team. Okwemba made his debut last weekend, bringing skills to the team after featuring for Chipu at this year's Junior World Cup in Brazil.
Defending champions KCB will face Menengai Cream Homeboyz in the second semi-finals.
