On October 2, 2019, FIFA ordered Cardiff City to pay £5.3 million to Nantes for the transfer fee of late Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala.
The ruling was met with disappointment from Cardiff City, who maintained that the deal was not completed in accordance with multiple contractual requirements and therefore considered it null and void.
Cardiff City has since announced plans to appeal the ruling, citing that the FIFA Players Status Committee did not consider the full documentation presented by the club.
Emiliano Sala, a 28-year-old Argentine footballer, tragically passed away on January 21, 2019, when the plane he was on crashed in the English Channel while on his way to join Cardiff City from Nantes.
The incident sparked a heated debate between the two clubs over who should bear the loss of the transfer fee.
