Following the tragic Likoni ferry accident, where a woman and her four-year-old daughter drowned after their vehicle plunged into the Indian Ocean, parents in Nairobi are now demanding that Governor Mike Sonko make swimming lessons mandatory in all public schools in the county.

On October 2, 2019, Governor Sonko shared a survival tactics video, which included information on how to react if one's vehicle were to sink in water while traveling with children.

However, the governor's post sparked anger from the online community, with many asking him to first ensure that school children learn how to swim before sharing such videos.

"I think swimming classes for all kids are necessary and floating jackets should be available for safety," said Rose Muita, a concerned citizen.

Many others echoed similar sentiments, with some questioning the effectiveness of the governor's video in the event of an emergency.
