On October 2, 2019, the National Assembly made a significant move when it rejected a lands committee report that had initially declined Tiya Galgalo's nomination to the National Land Commission.
The report, chaired by Rachel Nyamai, had cited Galgalo's failure to file her tax returns in 2017 as the reason for her rejection.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, MPs amended the report to include Galgalo in the list of nominees, sparking a heated debate in the house.
Isiolo North MP Hassan Oda's amendment sparked intense debate, with some MPs attempting to block the nomination of former Cabinet Secretary Kambi Kazungu as a commissioner.
Despite allegations of integrity against him, Kambi managed to survive the onslaught.
Ultimately, 114 MPs voted in favor of the amendments, while 70 opposed them.
The new commissioners, including Galgalo, will take over at the National Land Commission, with Lawyer Gershom Otachi set to succeed Mohammed Swazuri as Chairperson.
