On Wednesday, October 2, 2019, Likoni ferry operations were suspended for two hours to facilitate the salvage operation for a vehicle that submerged in the Indian Ocean on Sunday.
According to the Kenya Ferry Service, the suspension was necessary to allow salvage teams to operate uninterrupted. The service apologized for any inconvenience caused and advised ferry users to make prior arrangements.
Search teams, including officers from the Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Navy, Kenya Ports Authority, and private divers, have been working round the clock to recover the vehicle. However, efforts were hampered by poor weather.
Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna noted that the Government has been in contact with the family of Mariam Kigenda, who drowned with her four-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu. He assured the family of any assistance they may need and reiterated the Government's commitment to the protection and safety of all Kenyans.
