GSU Officer Accused of Slapping Mpesa Operator in Meru County

On October 1, 2019, a General Service Unit (GSU) officer attached at Kinisa Station visited an Mpesa shop in Meru County to withdraw KSh 400.

When the Mpesa operator, Carolyne Nkunja, asked him to produce his identification card as required, he became angry and allegedly lost his temper.

According to Nkunja, she was holding the money waiting for the ID card so she could record the transaction when the officer allegedly sneaked his hand past the shop's grills, snatched the money, and slapped her twice.

Nkunja later reported the matter at Mutuati Police Station under OB 18/30/9/2019, with her husband, Philip Nkunja, describing the incident as dehumanising and calling for the law to take its course.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident also asked the county commander and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to intervene and ensure justice for the Mpesa lady.

However, the officer, Derrick Nateminya, denied the claims, stating that Nkunja refused to give him part of the money he had withdrawn and that she started claiming he had beaten her up when he tried to call the area OCS.
