On October 2, 2019, a devastating ferry tragedy unfolded in the Likoni channel, claiming the lives of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu.
The mother and daughter drowned in the Indian Ocean after their vehicle rolled off the ferry on Sunday.
Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) suspended ferry operations for three hours on Wednesday morning to allow divers to retrieve the bodies.
According to KFS chairman Dan Mwazo, operations were put on hold from 9am to 12 noon.
On Tuesday, services were halted for 30 minutes for divers to map out the crossing.
Managing Director Bakari Gowa stated, 'We have identified a vessel at 75 feet deep and another at 135 feet. A team led by Kenya Navy officers will attempt to get to the first vessel.'
MPs have called for KFS and the Kenya Coast Guard to take responsibility for the tragedy, highlighting the need for disaster preparedness measures.
