On October 2, 2019, parents of children with special needs at Maranda High School in Siaya county expressed their concerns about the mistreatment of their children.
According to the parents, children who are visually impaired have been left without proper care, including access to brails and large print books, and readers to assist them.
One parent stated, 'The children with special needs are supposed to be trained on how to use brails and large print books while others are supposed to learn with the aid of readers which are nowhere to be seen.'
Despite the parents' concerns, the principal, Edwin Namachanja, has declined to address their issues, instead ordering them to take their children to schools that handle special needs students.
However, Namachanja claimed that something is being done about the plight of students with special needs, stating, 'There is only one student who has sight problems. Maranda is not a special school for that matter.'
He also stated that he has been in communication with the student's parents and that grievances have been forwarded to the concerned authorities.
Several parents have previously complained of mistreatment and discrimination of their children at the school, with some even referring to the principal's lack of response to their concerns.
