At least one inmate lost his life and eight others were injured in a road accident involving an Embu Prison vehicle in Tharaka Nithi, Kenya.

The vehicle, which was transferring inmates from Embu to Meru, lost control and rolled into the Thuci River on Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

Seven prison warders who were accompanying the inmates were also injured in the accident and were rushed to Chuka County Referral Hospital.

The incident comes just two days after four Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) officers were killed in a road accident on the Meru-Isiolo Highway.

Separately, an inmate at the Kibos maximum prison in Kisumu allegedly took his own life in his cell room on Monday evening, October 7, 2019.

According to County police commander Benson Maweu, the 27-year-old inmate used a mattress to hang himself, and police have launched investigations into the incident.

The deceased was serving a 20-year jail term for defilement and had already served seven years.

His body was transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital mortuary for postmortem.
