Published on October 1, 2019, a rare windstorm caught many Kenyans off guard, bringing power outages to Nairobi, Murang'a, Thika, and Machakos.
The storm, which marked the start of the short rain season, was caused by unstable air, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.
Deputy Director Samwel Mwangi warned of strong winds that could blow away roofs, billboards, or rocks, posing a danger to people below.
"Things being blown away could fall on people and that presents danger," Mwangi cautioned.
Motorists were also advised to be cautious due to reduced visibility caused by dust blown by the strong winds.
The met department forecasted strong winds of over 25 knots (12.5m/s) in the Eastern half of the country, with other regions experiencing rains.
