On October 1, 2019, a Nairobi court made a significant ruling in a case involving Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWS) and Nation Media Group (NMG), the parent company of NTV.
CWS had obtained a court order to stop NTV from airing an exposé on the ills at the State corporation, citing concerns that the exposé could reveal the identities of children involved.
However, NMG argued that the children's court lacked jurisdiction in the matter, as it was a defamation case rather than a matter related to the welfare of children.
According to NMG's lawyers, the case was actually aimed at defending CWS's reputation, rather than protecting children's welfare.
The court ultimately ruled in favor of NMG, dismissing the case and lifting the gag order on the exposé.
