Two days after Mariam Kigenda and her 4-year-old daughter, Amanda Mutheu, plunged into the ocean while aboard their vehicle, which slid off MV Harambee Ferry in Likoni, state agencies have yet to retrieve their bodies.

As a result, the family has been forced to seek help from private divers, who have successfully undertaken similar exercises in the past. According to family spokesperson Luka Mbati, the family has already paid Ksh100,000 to a private company, Kenya Rescue Divers, to undertake the exercise.

Although the government has spotted Mariam's vehicle at a depth of 173 feet in the ocean, they lack the necessary equipment to retrieve it. The family has no option but to pay private divers to retrieve the bodies of their loved ones.
