On October 1, 2019, a tense operation led by the Anti-Terrorist Police Unit (ATPU) in Likoni, Mombasa County, resulted in the deaths of three terror suspects in a shootout with police officers.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), seven suspects were arrested and more than 1,600 bullets were recovered during the operation. A grenade, G3 rifle, and other weapons were also found.
Among the items recovered were 68 air rifle pellets, five kilograms of Ammonium Nitrate (a bomb-making material), nine balaclavas, military and police uniforms, military holsters, rifle oil, six machetes, and knives.
The operation comes just three weeks before Mashujaa Day, which is set to be marked in Mombasa, and hours after the government assured Mombasa residents that they are safe, amid concerns of an impending terror attack by Al Shabaab.
