Uganda's opposition leader Bobi Wine has strongly condemned the government's decision to ban the wearing of police uniforms associated with the 'People Power' movement, which he plans to use in his campaign against President Yoweri Museveni.
Since his election to parliament in 2017, Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has been at odds with the Ugandan government, which has seen him as a threat to President Museveni's rule.
Wine has gained support from Ugandans who have praised his bravery in criticizing Museveni. However, the government has repeatedly arrested some of his supporters and disrupted his rallies, with police firing tear gas at his supporters.
Wine was injured in a crackdown during his campaign last year and was forced to seek medical treatment in the US.
Uganda's presidential election is expected to take place in early 2021, with Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, expected to run for re-election.
Although Museveni has not yet officially announced his candidacy, his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has already endorsed him as its candidate.
