'Kifuniko cha Asali' and other sheng words used when buying clothes

Sheng, a young language born from Nairobi's urban culture, has its roots in the city's fashion and trends. Despite its whimsical nature, Sheng has a foundation that is worth learning.

For those in the clothes industry, understanding Sheng is crucial. In Ngara market, hawkers like Kamau, alias Kamaa, have to adapt to the language to attract customers.

According to Kamau, he initially found it challenging to relate to the Sheng language, but he soon learned to appreciate its importance. 'I came from upcountry, where I was only using mother tongue. I started selling clothes in Ngara two years ago and now I am better. Kitambo nilikuanga nje sana and even my friends called me 'Mshamba' because I could not relate with the Sheng language.'

As a hawker, Kamau realized that most of his customers were university students who used Sheng. To cater to their needs, he decided to learn the language. 'Every time I went for stock in Gikomba, I made sure that I asked for new words from the suppliers. Sometimes, I could just listen and not talk, but I would ask later what the words meant,' he said.

One of Kamau's first Sheng words to learn was 'Ndula', which means shoes. He was thrilled to learn the word and started selling shoes as well. 'Ndio tu nitumiange hiyo jina,' Kamaa said.

Other essential Sheng words used by hawkers include 'Kladi' for clothes, 'Toja' or 'Trau' for trousers, 'Mbwenya' for blazer coats, 'Nyong'inyo' for socks, 'Ngepa' or 'Label' for caps, 'Buti' for boots, and 'Maangolo' for spectacles.

These words are not only essential for hawkers but also for anyone interested in learning Sheng. By understanding the language, one can better navigate Nairobi's urban culture and connect with its people.
