Published on October 1, 2019, a lobby group, Kenyans for Justice and Development (KEJUDE), has written to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) requesting investigations into eight Members of Parliament (MPs), two senators, and a former MP suspected of holding dual citizenship.
The group has listed several high-profile politicians, including Majority Leader Aden Duale, who allegedly holds Somali citizenship, and former MP Prof. Phillip Kaloki, suspected of holding US citizenship.
Other MPs listed as holding foreign citizenship include Yusuf Hassan Abdi (UK), Safia Sheikh Adan (Somali & Ethiopia), Man Haji Ali (Somali), Mohammed Dahir Duale (Somali), Mohammed Garane (Somali), Charles Ngusya Nguna (Greece), and Jane Kihara (US).
Senators mentioned to be holding dual citizenship include Narok Senator Ledama Olekina (US) and his Nakuru counterpart Susan Kihika (US).
The move comes after the Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations in Parliament blocked the appointment of Ms Mwende Mwinzi as Kenya's envoy to Seoul, South Korea, due to her failure to renounce her US citizenship.
According to the Leadership and Integrity Act, a State officer who acquires dual citizenship shall lose their position as a State officer.
