Rising Stars: Five Female Musicians Making Waves in Africa

Published on October 1, 2019

From South Africa to Kenya and Tanzania, the African music scene is home to a plethora of talented female musicians who are making waves with their unique styles and sounds.

Here are five female musicians from Africa who are worth watching out for:

Sho Madjozi

Sho Madjozi, a South African rapper, rose to fame after releasing a Swahili song called John Cena, named after the WWE wrestler John Cena. The song has garnered over 3 million views on YouTube and has been turned into a dance challenge that fans love.

Sho Madjozi was recently awarded a Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award as the Best New International Act, beating her competitors. She has also released other songs that have given her the opportunity to be recognized as the Female Artist of The Year in the South African Music Awards.

BeyT

BeyT, a Kenyan rapper of Ethiopian and Eritrean descent, has been giving a number of artists a run for their fans and money. She became popular after releasing a laid-back track called Wololo.

At one point, BeyT and Diamond Platnumz's girlfriend Tanasha Donna got into a social media brawl over the tag line 'Kenya to the World' which prompted the rapper to release a song dubbed 'Don to the Donna,' meant to diss Tanasha.

Petra

Petra, a Kenyan rapper and former Taurus music signee, considers herself an international force to reckon with. She has been working with big shots in the rap industry like Khaligraph Jones on the track Rider, proving she is indeed self-driven and has plans of making her music internationally recognized.
