Published on October 1, 2019, Nairobi County government has issued a seven-day notice for the collection of 97 unclaimed bodies lying at the Mbagathi District Hospital mortuary.

According to the notice, failure to collect the bodies within seven days will result in the county government seeking judicial authority for their disposal.

One of the unclaimed bodies is a 70-year-old man identified as Paul Muchai, who has been lying at the mortuary since April 3, 2017.

Meanwhile, Nakuru County Health Department has moved to court seeking to bury 20 unclaimed bodies that have been lying at the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital Mortuary for three months.

The Public Health Chief Officer, Samuel King'ori, stated that search for relatives to collect the bodies has been fruitless, and the preservation cost is accumulating.

The general hospital mortuary can only hold 50 bodies, while the Nakuru County mortuary has a capacity for 25.

Once the court order is obtained, the bodies will be interred in a mass grave at the Nakuru South Cemetery.
