According to the Ghana Oil Marketing Companies Association, the industry paid a staggering GH¢3 billion in taxes to the government in the first two quarters of 2019, with GH¢500 million paid as monthly tax in 2019.
Industry Coordinator Kwaku Agyeman-Dua highlighted the industry's significant contributions during a media soiree, stating that oil marketing companies and liquefied gas marketing companies invested $4 billion.
He also noted that the industry created 60,000 direct and 100,000 indirect jobs, with individual companies undertaking various corporate social responsibility projects in their areas of operation.
The association operates a total of 3,869 outlets across the country, comprising 1,720 service stations, 1,363 filling stations, 656 LPG stations, and 130 reseller outlets.
However, the industry faces several challenges, including differential zonal pricing, illegal fuel trade, and variation of levies by various institutions, which hinder their progress.
Coordinator Agyeman-Dua called on the government to extend the tax payment period from 21 days plus four days to 30 days or introduce a 'pay as you sell' system to ensure timely and effective tax compliance.
