On October 1, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at the Likoni Channel in Mombasa, where a car rolled back and plunged into the Indian Ocean, claiming the lives of 35-year-old Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu.
According to reports, the two died on Sunday evening, and their bodies are believed to be 60 meters under water.
Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) has temporarily suspended ferry services at the Likoni Channel for 30 minutes to allow ocean waters to calm, enabling divers to locate the car and the two bodies.
The retrieval operation comes almost 48 hours after the tragedy, casting a spotlight on security lapses and KFS's unpreparedness for disasters at the busy channel.
