On October 1, 2019, a devastating ferry accident occurred at Likoni Channel, claiming the lives of several people, including Mariam Kigenda and her daughter.

Mariam's husband, John Wambua, shared the heartbreaking details of their last conversation, which took place just before the accident.

According to Wambua, Mariam and their daughter were returning from their family land in Msambweni, Kwale county, where they had gone to check on the farm and pick vegetables for the family.

Mariam reportedly called Wambua to let him know about the long queue at the ferry, but later called him again to say they had boarded the ferry and were on their way home.

Wambua waited anxiously for his family's return, but his hopes were shattered when he heard about the accident at the ferry.

He rushed to the Likoni ferry Police station, shoeless, to find out what had happened to his family, only to be met with slow efforts to retrieve the victims.
