According to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), Kenyan mobile money transactions have seen a significant surge in the three months ending June 2019. The data shows that transactions worth KSh 2.1 trillion were conducted during this period, a 47% increase from the KSh 1.42 trillion recorded in the same period in 2018.
Of the total transactions, about 80% were conducted on Safaricom's M-Pesa platform, which is the leading mobile money service in Kenya. This is according to the regulator, who also reported that Safaricom's market share dropped to 63.5% in the three-month period from 65.4% in the previous year.
On the other hand, Safaricom's subscribers rose from 29.7 million in June 2018 to 33.1 million in the period under review. Its closest rival, Airtel Kenya, which is expected to merge with Telkom Kenya, had a market share of 24.6%, an improvement from 21.4% in 2018.
The regulator also reported that there were 52.2 million active SIM cards in the country at the end of June 2019, a significant jump from 45.5 million reported in 2018.
