On January 15, 2019, a terror attack at DusitD2 complex in Nairobi's 14 Riverside Drive, Westlands, left 21 people dead and over 700 civilians safely evacuated.
More than a year later, on September 27, 2020, a multi-agency team apprehended Fawaz Ahmed Hamdun, a suspect believed to have been involved in the recruitment of Kenyan youth into al-Shabaab and the planning of the DusitD2 attack.
According to the police, Hamdun was smoked out of his house in Majengo, Mombasa county, where he was reportedly hiding in the wake of intensified security operations and the fight against terrorism.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it was meant to send a message to the United States in retaliation for US President Donald Trump's decision to declare Jerusalem the capital city of Israel.
Several suspects were arrested in connection with the attack, and the multi-agency security team was commended for promptly neutralizing all the criminals.
