On January 15, 2019, a devastating terrorist attack occurred at the Dusit D2 complex in Nairobi, Kenya, leaving 21 people dead.
Police have now arrested one of the masterminds behind the attack, Fawaz Ahmed Hamdun, a 28-year-old Al Shabaab operative.
According to a police statement, Hamdun was drawn out of hiding by a multi-agency team on Sunday night.
Hamdun is accused of facilitating the re-entry of suicide bomber Mahir Riziki into Kenya, who detonated an explosive near a restaurant at the Dusit complex.
Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack and graphic footage showed Riziki detonating an explosive on his body.
Hamdun is also accused of recruiting youth for the terrorist group, most recently in Majengo, Mombasa County, where he was busted.
The suspect was captured in CCTV footage obtained from cameras along the streets of Mombasa a few weeks ago.
Hamdun was seen with a missing boy, Salim Fariz Hadin, who is believed to have been recruited into the terrorist group.
Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, which was carried out by attackers including Salim Gichunge, who was executed by police during the attack.
