On October 1, 2019, parliamentary committee chairman Kanini Kega expressed his satisfaction with the exit of SportPesa and Betin from the Kenyan market.
According to Kega, betting does not add value to the economy, and the closure of the two bookmakers' shops will help improve the lives of Kenyan youth.
He argued that gambling has made Kenyan youth become unproductive members of society.
“Betting does not create wealth,” Kega said at Kabiruini PCEA in Nyeri on Sunday.
He emphasized that the government welcomes foreign investors who create job opportunities, but betting firms are not beneficial to the economy.
“As a government, we welcome those companies that want to invest in our country, those who will create wealth for our people, but some investors like those engaging in betting business are not adding any value,” said the lawmaker.
