Published on October 1, 2019, Kenya's drug landscape has undergone a significant shift. The country, once a transit point for narcotics, has morphed into a hub of consumption.
Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai expressed concern over the increasing consumption of narcotics, citing the rise of powerful drug barons who are importing the substances mainly for the local market.
“Kenya is no longer the hub of trafficking and transition. It is now becoming the hub of consumption of drugs. The drugs are no longer moving out. They are being consumed in this country,” Mutyambai said.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i echoed Mutyambai's sentiments, describing the level of drug abuse in the country as alarming. He emphasized the need for concerted efforts to address the menace, citing the enhancement of rehabilitation facilities at the Coast as a step in the right direction.
“We will sink as a society if we can’t deal with the mess now. We must join hands as stakeholders to address it,” Matiang’i said.
